Let’s give our wardrobes the love they deserve…
I want to share how you can shop more sustainably and cherish the beautiful clothes you already have. Let’s give our wardrobes the love they deserve.
How to Shop for Sustainable Clothing
1. Choose Quality Over Quantity
It’s tempting to bulk-buy from sales or trend-led collections, but sustainable shopping is all about buying less and choosing better. Look for natural fibres like organic cotton, linen, hemp or TENCEL™. Well-made pieces might cost more upfront, but they last far longer and feel much better to wear.
2. Research the Brand’s Values
Not every ‘eco’ label tells the truth. Take a few minutes to check out the brand’s website:
- Do they share where and how the clothes are made?
- Are workers paid fair wages?
- Do they use sustainable packaging?
Some genuinely great brands I love for everyday staples and occasional pieces include People Tree, Baukjen, Sezane, and Ninety Percent.
3. Embrace Pre-Loved
There is nothing more thrilling than finding a vintage gem or designer piece at a fraction of the price. Check out Depop, Vinted, or your local charity shop. Events like clothes swaps are also a fun way to refresh your wardrobe without spending a penny (plus – they’re very Luxe My Party-friendly!).
4. Buy with Intention
Before buying something new, ask yourself:
- Can I style this 3 different ways?
- Will I still love it in a year?
- Is this replacing something I already own?
If the answer is yes, you’re making a conscious, intentional choice — go for it.
How to Care for the Clothes You Already Own
Buying less doesn’t mean enjoying fashion less. In fact, mending and caring for clothes has made me appreciate my wardrobe more than ever.
1. Learn a Few Simple Mending Skills
A loose button or small tear shouldn’t be a goodbye. Here are easy ways to give clothes a second chance:
- Sewing on a button – It takes 5 minutes and a YouTube tutorial.
- Patching holes – Especially for kids’ clothes or jeans, visible mending can look stylish!
- Darning knitwear – Not just for grannies anymore. There’s something magical about keeping a beloved jumper going season after season.
2. Wash Less, Air More
Over-washing clothes wears them out faster. Here’s how I care for mine:
- Air clothes between wears
- Use a gentle detergent and cold water
- Wash inside out and avoid tumble drying when possible
3. Store Clothes Thoughtfully
Good storage can add years to your clothes. Keep knitwear folded (never hung), zip up zips before washing, and protect special items in breathable bags.
4. Fall Back in Love with Your Wardrobe
Have a seasonal wardrobe edit — try mixing up pieces you haven’t worn in a while. Pinterest and Instagram are full of style inspiration using things you already own.
Why It Matters
Choosing sustainable fashion isn’t just about the clothes — it’s about respecting the planet, the people who make what we wear, and ourselves. When we shift from throwaway habits to conscious choices, we rediscover joy, creativity, and confidence in our personal style.
I still adore fashion. I still love dressing up. But now, every piece in my wardrobe tells a story — and that feels far better than any fast fashion haul ever did.
